These are the “official” socks knitters were encouraged to make for the Union soldiers in the Civil War. The pattern was published in 1865 by the United States Sanitary Commission, a civilian organization dedicated to providing support for Union forces. Unusually for their time, these are knitted in so-called "coarse" yarn (sport-weight yarn) at a very tight gauge.
